Atelierhaus Scholle51 is situated directly opposite Sanssouci Park, within historically protected district of Brandenburger Vorstadt in Potsdam. The building consists of two parts: a 130-year-old villa and a 1970s extension. Over the years, it has served various functions, including residential building, offices, and a kindergarten, but was left vacant for some time. Since 2010, the space has been occupied by a vibrant community of artists, creatives, and musicians.

In 2015, the opportunity arose to purchase the building and and tailor it to their specific needs. Initially, we were tasked with conducting a feasibility study to assess the building and planning regulations. We explored innovative floor plan solutions to maximize the usable space and developed cost-effective options for the renovation and conversion of the building.

Throughout the lengthy approval process, we supported the house association, overseeing the project from the initial design phase through to its completion in the summer of 2023.

The building underwent extensive renovations, guided by the principles of cost-efficiency and preservation. Only essential work was undertaken, with original components being secured and retained wherever possible.

The result is a raw, unfinished aesthetic that aligns perfectly with the identity of its occupants.

Today, the building features a new, prominent main entrance with a foyer, adjoining common area, and kitchen, which serve as the heart of the project. The large staircase with seating steps often hosts small meetings and events. The floor plans are streamlined, eliminating confusion and improving navigation. The ground-floor music rehearsal rooms have been soundproofed using room-in-room systems, while the first floor houses artists’ studios and workshops. Smaller workspaces and offices occupy the second floor.
