POST-PRIMARY SCHOOL DUBLIN
International two-stage competition 2012
Kingswood Tallaght, Dublin, Ireland
1000 pupil post-primary school
The new post-primary school in will be a place for promoting the child’s growth, health and learning through positive interaction via a grid of educational facilities. Externally clear in form and expression, the organisation is reminiscent of the simple children’s noughts and crosses game.
The building is organised as four 2-storey pedagogical ‘bands’ that enclose an external courtyard. The grid manages to break down the large programme by creating four volumes of varying length, each with specific pedagogical identities that generate an intimate sense of scale at once lively and welcoming. The grid reduces travel distances; the circulation overlaps are informal zones that promote social interaction.
